A Mae Update
Mae has become a fixture around here. She's officially one of us.
At night she trots from room to room, taking a nap in each. She snores, stretches, grunts like a large bear, and rolls over on her back to sleep some more.
She's the first one on the scene when the dinner bell is rung. She stays really close to Queenie during each meal (usually with her big nose resting on Queenie's lap where she catches the morsels as they fall). This is how she looks at you when you are eating tasty food:
She pathetically lowers her head and then looks up at you with pitiful eyes.
This is where she likes to stand. Right between my knees.
She also eats smurfs and drinks from strange places, but we still love her.

Our cocoon hatched!
About three weeks ago, we found three of these giant cocoons in my brother-in-law's sweet potato field. The kids brought them home and stuck them in a box with some dirt and then forgot about them.
They stayed forgotten until a few days ago, when early in the morning while reading his Bible, Daddy Duck heard something moving. The cat heard it too. They peeked into the box and there was a huge, hideous looking moth hanging there on the edge. It was trying to get out, but it couldn't fly.
I can't believe Monkey Man was brave enough to touch it! It clung to his fingers and made us all shudder.
We were kinda hoping for a beautiful, colorful butterfly.
Monkey Man let it crawl up his jacket.
But then, it got a little too close for even Monkey Man's comfort. (Bahahaha!! I can't look at this picture without laughing.)
I bet the moth had a similar expression on its face!
We have yet to identify it. Any ideas?

Fall Leaf Art
Way back when my big kids were little, we made these "Leaf Art" hangings. I had forgotten about them until a few days ago, when my kids started collecting and admiring leaves. It's an easy way to display their favorite ones and in my opinion, it looks very pretty.All you need to make them are leaves, 2 sheets of wax paper, an iron and a towel. Place one sheet of wax paper (about 12" square, but really, it can be any size) on your ironing board and arrange the leaves on it (taking care to leave space around each leaf). Lay the other (same size) sheet of wax paper on top of the leaves, cover it with a towel, and iron it with a hot iron until the wax has melted and "sealed" the leaves into place. Voila! Your kids will be impressed. If you hang them on the window, the light shines through the paper and looks nice & fall-like.
You can also melt little bits of crayons in between the wax paper to give it more color, but I didn't tell my kids that or they'd be chopping up every crayon in the house.

It's not all bad
Good news! Our generator is now hooked to our well pump, so our showers no longer look like this:
I don't think the kids are as excited about this prospect as I am, though.
Big Sister, Sugar Baby, heated water for them and then stood guard and to make sure they used soap.
I'm not sure when our power will be back on. I heard yesterday that our area was last on the list. So thankful for the generator!

Hurricane Irene
from our front porch:

this is my neighbor's yard. they had about 8 enormous oak trees fall, all towards their house. their front door was blocked, and there were some branches against the roof, but miraculously, there was no major damage, and they were safe!
this is their front yard. it almost seems like something from the jurassic period.
this is the scrap fort my kids built back in May

24 hours later, we are still without power. we had some water leak in the back door & will probably have to tear up and replace some of the flooring there. other than that, we are doing great! so thankful no trees landed on our house and that our neighbors are safe as well.

Batten down the hatches
We spent the day getting ready for Hurricane Irene's arrival. The boys disassembled the pool - all by themselves! (They also killed 11 black widows in the process. YIKES!)
Mae and Bootsie removed all the screens from the windows and put them in the shed.
Sugar Baby led the way in the laundry department, and I (among other things) baked bread...
Generator is ready, extra water is set aside, and poptarts are in the pantry. I think we are ready!

Phonics at your fingertips

Sugar Baby painted Queenie's finger & toenails last night and also painted the vowels that Queenie is learning on them.
Considering how much time Queenie spends adoring her nails when they are painted, I thought it was a brilliant idea! She'll know her ABC's in no time!

Dry Erase
We've discovered another little thing that has helped our homeschooling and I thought I'd share it on here, because it might help someone else.
Daddy Duck bought a huge sheet of dry erase board from Lowes for about $12 and had them cut it into smaller rectangles - about 18" by 24". I think we ended up getting 8 sections from the one large sheet. Everyone likes having their own board.
They've been extremely helpful! Some of the kids like using them in place of scratch paper, Queenie likes them for practicing her letters and everyone likes them for drawing or doodling.

Time for School!
The summer has flown by here, and even though it's not officially over, we went ahead and started school this past week. It feels good to get back into a routine and have some semblance of sanity!
The boys are studying ancient history this year. Lucky for them, I had a large batch of unused pink marshmallow fondant in the fridge (left from a red lego birthday cake gone awry) and we pulled it out and made our own version of Ancient Sumerian Cuneiform Tablets!
(It kind of reminds me of a piece of salmon.)
Anywho...
All six of my ducklings are officially in school this year. Queenie is so excited to have her own books, notebooks, pencils and flashcards. I love this time of year!
